Clean The Walls & Surfaces First – Many homeowners tend to forget a critical step which is cleaning the walls of the space they wish to paint. A rag and a bucket of soapy water are all you need to get any impurities, dust, and cobwebs off of the surface you wish to paint. Metal surfaces may need to be scrubbed with a brush or sanded first, so be thorough during this step!
Not Enough Paint – You can always finish a job if you have too much paint, but if you run out now, you’re in serious trouble. It’s always better to overestimate the amount of paint you need than underestimate. Running out halfway through is frustrating and there’s no guarantee you’ll be able to find exactly the same paint you had before, leaving you in a lurch with a partially finished project.
Painters Tape – New homeowners and novice painters may think that just any kind of tape will work, this is simply not the case. Painter’s tape is specifically designed to not leave behind a sticky residue and to be easy enough to see to adequately mask off the sections you need without painting over the tape’s boundary. Many homes have expensive crown molding and if not masked off properly can compromise the finish, paint, and/or the overall longevity of your molding and other sensitive hard-to-reach areas.
Not All Paint Brushes Are Created Equal – Many people think a paintbrush is just a paintbrush, but you wouldn’t tell a fine artist to use a paint roller on their canvas, would you? I think not. For any contracting job, big or small, using the correct tool for the job is absolutely imperative. Don’t cost yourself money over time by having to redo your paint jobs because of the lackluster finish because of an inferior brush choice.
Of course, the most important thing to not forget to do while painting your home is to have a thorough plan.
